Why We Should Be Afraid After a Terrorist Attack

The main emotion we experience after hearing of a new terrorist attack is fear. We become afraid of the imminent danger surrounding us. Especially lone wolf attacks increase the chance of an atrocity happening everywhere, at any time: on a regional train near Würzburg, on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, at the entry of a music festival in the ancient town Ansbach, or during morning Mass at a church in the suburb of Rouen in Normandy. No place is safe anymore. Fear in the presence of evil is rightly justified. However, the predominant message from politicians and society in general is to suppress our normal emotional reaction and continue on with our lives as if nothing has happened. In other words, become indifferent.
